Current Bill Summary
CCS/HCS/SB 572 - KINDERGARTEN AGE CUTOFF AND READINESS -
This act eliminates the current requirement that school districts
evaluate readiness for entry into kindergarten or first grade for
students whose fifth or sixth birthday, respectively, falls
within three months of the cutoff date. The cutoff date shall be
August 1 of the school year rather than the current July 1
cutoff.
The school districts in St. Louis City and Kansas City may
establish a cutoff date between August 1 and October 1. Students
who begin kindergarten in such districts and transfer to any
other district shall not be denied enrollment for failure to meet
the age cutoff. Also, students who complete kindergarten and
then transfer to another district shall not be denied enrollment
in the other district for failure to meet the first grade age
cutoff.
This portion of the bill is similar to HB 640 from 1995.
The effective date of this act is July 1, 1997.
